Haiti fundraiser, Friday, features poetry and refreshments

Charles Quist-Adade’s Sociology 1125 students and the Ghanaian-Canadian Association of B.C. will extend a helping hand to Haiti with a fund-raiser on Friday, Jan. 22, from 5:30-9:30 p.m.

The event will feature poetry by Scruffmouth and refreshments will be provided. Donations are tax deductible. It will be held on the Surrey campus in the Fir Building, Room D128.

Charity event for Big Brothers will be a circus

Kwantlen’s second-year public relations students will be putting on a fund-raising event for Big Brothers of Greater Vancouver on Feb. 9.

The event, “Circus of the Night,” is a circus-themed benefit, featuring music, an illusionist and both a live and silent auction.

“We chose Big Brothers because it is a well-respected organized charity that is important to society,” said Natalie Burgwin, PR student and one of the events organizers.

Although the fundraiser is part of the student’s course work, they said that it’s not about grades.

“We’re not just doing it to pass a course,” said organizer Ashley Letts. The event and charity are something they really believe in, she said.

Tickets for the event are $40 and can be ordered through the PR department.

KSA v. CFS-BC won’t be resolved until January

Kwantlen students will be waiting over two more months for CFS representation.

The KSA v. CFS-BC court petition, which will decide whether Kwantlen’s elected ex-officio representative for the CFS-BC can join the executive committee, after the CFS-BC refused to ratify his nomination, has been bumped until January for administrative reasons.

The KSA has decided not to nominate another student to the CFS-BC executive committee.

The B.C. Supreme Court will resolve the issue in January on a date that is yet to be decided, while Kwantlen students, who voted to remain members of the CFS in 2008, continue to funnel $150,000 per year into the organization without receiving  representation.

Mature Spirits event postponed

The Mature Spirits event that was to be held on March 6 at the Surrey campus has been postponed to March 27.

The event will be an open forum for the mature students at Kwantlen to share opinions, concerns and recommendations with the Mature Students Commission. Wine and cheese tasting in the GrassRoots Lounge will start the night off and the Kwantlen Jazz Combo will also be present to entertain guests.

The event will be held in the G building conference centre and the KSA will be offering a babysitting area. According to Kwantlen’s general admissions, a mature student is considered to be anyone 19 years and older who is not a secondary school graduate.

Slumdog Millionaire screening March 6

The Pakistani Students Association of Kwantlen will be screening the Academy Award-winning film “Slumdog Millionaire” for Kwantlen faculty and students only on Friday, March 6, in the Conference Centre  (Building G) at the Surrey Campus. Doors open at 5:30 p.m., with the movie starting at 6:30 p.m.

Kwantlen fashion show April 1

The annual Kwantlen Polytechnic University fashion event, The Show, will be held April 1 at the River Rock Casino Show Theatre (8811 River Rd, Richmond). There will be matinees at 1 p.m. and 3:30 p.m.; tickets $15 each. An evening show will be held at 7:30 p.m. with tickets for $30.

Tax Info for students

There will be an income tax information session for students on Wednesday, Feb. 25 from 10 a.m. to noon in the Conference Centre at the Richmond campus.

Experts from Revenue Canada as well as several financial institutions will be on hand to answer any questions about the Canadian tax system and how it applies to students.

Speed dating a no-go

The Langley speed dating event has been cancelled, due to lack of female interest. 

Upcoming Lecture on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict

Israeli activist Jeff Halper will be delivering a lecture on the situation of Palestinians in Gaza on Wednesday, Jan.28 at 10 a.m. at the Surrey Kwantlen campus. Professor Hapler is the co-ordinator of the Israeli Committee Against House Demolition, and is a critic of Israel’s policy towards Palestinians. His recent book is entitled “An Israeli in Palestine.”

The lecture will be held at 10 a.m. in room D128.

Kwantlen open house

Kwantlen Polytechnic University will showcase all 135 of its programs at the Big Big Open House, on the Surrey campus on Friday, Feb. 27 and Saturday, Feb. 28, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. both days.
